Description
Vitamin A and vitamin D work synergistically at a ratio of 25:1, which is why we have created a high-quality blend of both vitamin A and D3 at this ratio (Vitamin A 10,000iu to Vitamin D3 400iu).
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble nutrient that occurs in two forms; carotene and retinol. The carotene form is found in plant-based foods such as carrots and sweet potatoes. The human body has to convert this form into retinol before it can be utilised by cells.
Studies show that some individuals have a genetic variant which may cause poor conversion between these forms of vitamin A. For this reason, we use a high-quality pure vitamin A acetate in our supplement. This is a type of preformed retinol, which means it doesn't require conversion in the body and is suitable for vegetarians.
Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin which can either be ingested from food or manufactured by the body as a result of sunlight falling on the skin. Food sources of vitamin D include fatty fish such as mackeral, herring and salmon. Mushrooms contain small amounts of vitamin D, although this is the D2 form, which is less bioavailable to the body than the D3 form.
Factors that increase vitamin D requirement include low consumption of fish, and low exposure to direct sunlight. It is adviseable for those regularly working inside buildings to monitor their vitamin D3 levels regularly, to check if supplementation is needed. Vitamin D3 supplements are also popular for use during the darker months of the UK, when sunlight exposure is reduced.
The Vitamin D3 in this supplement is made from natural lichen, a type of fungi that develops from algae. Lichen contains incredibly concentrated amounts of vitamin D3.
